RESPONSIVE DOUBLES
A responsive double is a double of an opponent's raise (through 4S)
after partner has made a takeout double:
South West North East
1S Dbl 2S/3S/4S Dbl - responsive
This double is primarily for takeout, like a negative double.
Always prefer a suitable bid in preference to a responsive double.
The time for a responsive double is when you must do something, but
do not have any reasonable bid. A responsive double denies the
values for a notrump bid.
The following two assumptions serve as guidelines for this double:
1) A takeout double of one major implies four cards in the other
major.
2) A takeout double of a minor implies at least seven cards in the
majors, with at least three cards in each major.
When these principles are violated, as they must sometimes be,
there will be compensating values in the doubler's hand--extra
strength, good distribution, or safety in a long suit. According-
ly, it will seldom hurt to proceed on these assumptions.
Cases and Requirements
South West North East
1H Dbl 2H Dbl
East has a maximum of three spades; she must bid spades with four
or more. Since West may now have to bid at the three level, East
should have at least 8 HCP. If she lacks spade support, she must
have support for both minors. West avoids bidding a weak four-card
spade suit after the double, since East has a maximum of three
spades.

1H Dbl 2H Dbl
Pass 2S Pass 3C - implies both minors
If East were to bid 2NT instead of 3C, she would show a hand that
was a little light for an immediate 2NT bid over the 2H raise.
South West North East
1C Dbl 2C Dbl
1D Dbl 2D Dbl
These doubles promise support for both majors, 3-3, 3-4, or 4-4
(but not four spades and three hearts, with which one must bid 2S
or pass). The double requires about 6-9 HCP, but it is better to
have 8-9 HCP with only 3-3 in the majors. If the takeout doubler
has 4-4 in the majors, he bids 2H, not 2S, remembering that the
responsive doubler may have four hearts and three spades, but not
vice versa.
West can make a non-forcing jump to show a good double, or cue bid
to force to game. A minor suit bid by West denies a four-card major
and is not forcing. A 2NT bid by West is likely to be passed, so
he should bid 3NT if he sees game potential in notrump:
South West North East
1C Dbl 2C Dbl
Pass 2D - denies a four-card major
2NT - not good enough for a 1NT overcall
3NT - too good for a 1NT overcall
3D/3H/3S - invitational only
3C - forcing to game
South West North East
1S Dbl 2S Dbl
This double implies four hearts, or perhaps three good hearts with
short spades. East is afraid to bid hearts freely for fear of
getting too high. West might raise such a free 3H bid, playing East
for a bigger hand, since the bid is just one level short of game.
This double shows 7-10 HCP, perhaps 9-10 HCP with only three
hearts. West must bid game if all he needs is an 8-9 HCP dummy with
trump support in hearts, or he can cue bid.
South West North East
1D Dbl 3D Dbl
1C Dbl 3C Dbl
East has at least 3-3 in the majors, maybe 3-4 or 4-4, but not 4-3
(with which she must bid 3S or pass). Alternatively, East could
have five spades, with or without heart support. The double
requires 7-10 HCP, 9-10 HCP with only 3-3 in the majors.
West bids hearts with 4-4 in the majors, since East cannot have 4-3
in those suits. West can cue bid if he wants to be in game but is
not sure which denomination would be best. He may make this cue
bid with four spades and three hearts (responder will choose spades
with equal length), but with four hearts and three spades he should
just bid the hearts. If he cue bids, he might wind up in a 4-3
spade fit instead of a 4-4 heart fit.
South West North East
1D Dbl 3D Dbl
Pass 3H Pass 3S - shows five spades
East was a little weak for a free bid of 3S directly over 3D, which
might get raised to game, so she chooses this weaker sequence.
South West North East
1S Dbl 3S Dbl
1H Dbl 4H Dbl
1D Dbl 4D Dbl
1C Dbl 4C Dbl
These doubles show enough strength to expect that the hand belongs
to the doubling side, at least 9 HCP. East promises at least some
support for the unbid major(s).
After a responsive double at any level, the doubler may choose to
pass for penalties, so responder must not violate the HCP require-
ments for a responsive double.
The following are business doubles, not responsive doubles:
South West North East
1C Pass Pass Dbl
2C Dbl (2C a rebid, not a raise)

1C Dbl 2D Dbl (2D not a raise)

Pass Dbl 3H Dbl
The responsive double is also used after a raise of a weak opening:
South West North East
2S Dbl 3S Dbl - responsive double
Responsive doubles also apply after a negative double:

1C 1S Dbl 2S
Dbl - responsive double
South almost guarantees four hearts with this double. He does not
have enough for a free 3H bid, which shows extra values. See the
chapter NEGATIVE DOUBLES OF SIMPLE OVERCALLS.
